Animal Farm by George Orwell

24 Mar

All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others.

This is one of those classic books that everybody knows they should read – and in fact it’s so well written, so easy to understand, and so short, that there’s no reason not to. When you read this book, you feel immediately that you’re reading something great.

You do not need to know anything about Russian history to enjoy Animal Farm – and by the end you will know a lot without even meaning to. The satire of Soviet Communism is so scathing, and the animal characters portrayed so earnestly, that as an animal-lover I almost found some parts difficult to read.

If you would like to spend some time on Wikipedia before or after reading Animal Farm:

Old Major = Lenin
Snowball = Trotsky
Napoleon = Stalin

Summary:

What happens when the animals drive out Mr. Jones and attempt to run the farm themselves.
