Cruciverbalism by Stanley Newman

A fun and fast read if you’re a crossword-lover, which the person who gave me this as a gift knew I was. It is a brief look into the history of the crossword (which is perfect because does the history of the crossword really need to be anything but brief?) as well as a guide to the conventions of constructing and thus solving crosswords. The author also dwells on the expandable capabilities of the aging brain given enough mental exercise.

Summary:

If you love crosswords, this book is bound to enhance your puzzling pleasure. Acclaimed crossword expert Stanley Newman takes you behind the grid to show what really makes crossword puzzles (and their creators) tick – and offers proven strategies that will make you a better solver.
